RICHARD GORDON Cofounder and Owner

Richard grew up in New York with food-obsessed parents and learned to love food and cooking at an early age. Forgoing his love of food for his greater love for law and order, he studied at Boston University School of Law after receiving an undergraduate degree with a double major in Political Science and English and a Communications minor from Tufts University. In 2005, he turned from the law to the restaurant business after a long career as a criminal prosecutor when he and a friend opened The Buttery to fill the need for a friendly neighborhood bakery-café in the South End.

When Richard isn’t working, you’ll find him on a hike with his dogs, Madison, Harriet and Dexter. No ordinary dogs, each has a Buttery cupcake flavor named for them and a portion of annual cupcake sales are donated to animal rescue causes. Richard also loves to cook, supporting area CSAs by using fresh ingredients from local farms.
